"High-Tech Hunter" Wins "Best Of Open" Award

For the second consecutive year, the Association of Great Lakes Outdoor Writers (AGLOW) has named a story by John Meacham "Best of Open" in the magazine division of its Awards-in-Craft contest.

"Henry Johnson and the High-Tech Hunter" was published in the July/August 2004 issue of Turkey Call, which is sent to more than 500,000 members of the National Wild Turkey Federation. The open category, sponsored by Ducks Unlimited, includes outdoor topics topics, non-game wildlife, general conservation issues and humor.

Meacham accepted his award during AGLOW's 49th annual conference October 12-15 at Arrowhead Resort in Alexandria, Minn.

"Meacham's "Fergie Foreman and the Big Boss Gobbler," published in Petersen's Bowhunting, won the award in 2004.

"High-Tech Hunter" is based on the legend of John Henry, the steel-drivin' man," Meacham said. "Ol' John Henry has to race a steam drill to save his job as a hammer swinger on the railroad. Ol' Henry Johnson has to race a whiz kid with a computer to save his job as outdoor editor on the radio station."

"Fergie Foreman and the Big Boss's Gobbler" is the story of a reluctant hunting guide, a hard-headed hunter, a wise old tom and a test of wills over the letter and spirit of the law.
